Rock Garden of Chandigarh

Rock Garden of Chandigarh

Overview

The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is one of India’s most imaginative public spaces. Created in 1957 by Nek Chand, it began as a secret artistic experiment built entirely from discarded materials collected during the city’s construction. Over time, it expanded into a 40-acre sculpture park that now attracts visitors from across the country and beyond. As you walk through its narrow corridors and stone passageways, the garden gradually opens into expansive courtyards filled with handcrafted human and animal figures. Broken bangles, tiles, ceramic fragments, and industrial waste have been transformed into artistic installations. Small waterfalls and textured walls add depth to the immersive experience. The Rock Garden stands as a powerful example of sustainability and creativity. Long before recycling became a global movement, this space demonstrated how waste could be turned into cultural value. It is not just a tourist attraction but a symbol of imagination, patience, and artistic resilience within a structured urban environment.
