Capitol Complex

Capitol Complex

Overview

The Capitol Complex represents the architectural and political heart of Chandigarh. Designed in the 1950s by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, it symbolizes India’s modern aspirations after independence. The complex includes the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Legislative Assembly, and the Secretariat. These monumental structures are built in bold Brutalist style, featuring exposed concrete and geometric forms. The vast open spaces surrounding the buildings create a sense of authority and symmetry. The Open Hand Monument, a central feature, represents peace and openness in governance. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Capitol Complex is more than a government district. It is a statement of modernist design and national identity. Visiting this site offers insight into how architecture can reflect political vision and historical transformation.
